Is it normal for men to work on their gluteal (butt) muscles? There is this machine at my Bally's Total Fitness gym that is designed to work gluteal muscles. However, I mostly see women using them. Is it meant to be used by men? Also, how come in the gym you see 10 machines to work biceps, but so little machines for muscles such as, say, lower back muscles? How much should I concentrate or ignore muscles such as lower back, gluteals, etc.? because I wouldnt want to have an unproportional body
I want to increase the size of my gluteal muscles.? I want to go up by at least two inches. So far after a little more than two months, I've only added about half an inch. I've been doing squats with increasing weights and taking protein supplements, but it seems like it's taking longer than it should to see any sort of growth. Is there anything else I can do or eat to see any gains? Oh, and I do the weights at least three days a week. Thanks!
Can I increase my butt/hips (I mean gluteal muscles) by doing LUNGES ?? My hips are 38 " now & I would like to increase it a few inches if possible. I am 40, male and have been working out on a regular basis (more or less) for the last 12/13 yrs. I am fit and also have a more or less good physique. I am from India. But since I am tall (6'1") is it a bit difficult to put extra mass (after a certain age) ?? I am asking this question especially to all fitness pros, & also bodybuilders. Please let me know.
Is gluteal muscle injections safe? Few years back i had and pain relieve shot for my back problem at the ER and since then i experience pain in gluteal muscle and it gets to the point when it really hurts to move around. Its sound funny but i am really concerned because its seems to be getting worse. I thought so too but my back is ok its just my butt cheek and leg. Does it matter in which position you have to be when they give you that shot?
Exercises for hard to target muscle groups? I have a membership at the local YMCA and use the Nautilus equipment. I've found that it's hard to target certain muscle groups. Like the forearms, there doesn't seem to be a machine for that. Or the gluteal muscles in the buttocks. Or the side muscles that give the torso it's V shape, whatever you call them. Can you describe some good techniques to work them? Or give some links to a site showing pictures or a video of it? I've got access to free weights and medicine balls and other equipment. Thanks in advance for any help.
Horrid hip and gluteal aching...? I am 27 y/o female with spondylosis and spondylolisthesis at L5/S1, old compression fracture at L2/L3, and disc degeneration/buldging/thinning from L2 through S1. I experience back pain on a regular basis. However, what seems to be an increasingly worsening issue lately is this horrible burning/aching/crawling sensation I have throughout my hips and glutes, sometimes sometimes extending down into my knees, which gets worse in the evening. My ortho attributed this to a mechanical and muscular issue arising from my spinal condition. To me, though, this hip aching feels otherworldly sometimes and completely unrelated to the spinal issues, despite my understanding that my hip and gluteal muscles are probably pretty taxed from having to support my often-flared lower back. It makes relaxing and sleeping impossible sometimes. By the way, NSAIDS do not work on the hip/glute aching, but Vicodin does take the edge off. I've also tried Avinza, Cymbalta, Lyrica and Topamax for pain - to no avail.
Gluteal muscle strain/sciatic nerve? Okay so I'm 14 years old and I play for a travel ball team as a catcher. Two days ago at our tournament, there was a play at home that forced me to get on my knees to block the plate. A wild throw pulled me off the third base line forcing me to slide back on my shin guards to make it back to get the out on time. When the girl slid into me, her foot caught the inside of my left knee and pushed it back so i was kind of in a bent knee splits position and then I heard a popping noise. She then crawled on top of me when she noticed she knocked the ball out of my glove to touch home plate. I then tried to tough it out and stood up. I thought I was okay until there was a major burning pain in my hip. The umpire, noticing I was in pain, told me to sit down. As soon as I did so and put weight on my left side, I immediatley felt another pop as though it was out of place and I popped it back in. This sent extreme pain to my hip and gluteal area. Now I'm using an old pair of crutches that i had at home, but I can walk in a limping way. I found that every time I take a step, I get a sharp shooting pain that goes from the inside of my knee up to the outside of my hip where it starts to burn. My dad said it may be a sciatic nerve strain of some sort or just a pulled gluteal muscle. I've been doing the usual alternation of ice and a heating pad but it doesn't seem to be helping. I'm in too much pain to stretch at this point. Any suggestions on what I can do to heal it or what kind of injury it may be? There is pain when I'm just standing. My dad tried to massage it but I had to have him stop due to extreme pain as soon as he put the slightes pressure on it.
looking for answers about a gluteal hip pain that does not want to go away? About 6 weeks ago i might have possibly caused myself an injury while doing a kick in my workout. I ignored the initial pain, mainly because i always seem to have pain in my lower back and hip areas. I continued to work out until it finally got real bad a few days later and i could barely walk. It felt like it started at my tailbone and radiated across my upper gluteal muscle and wrapped around my hip. My chiropractor told me it was not the sacral ileac joint and he could not pinpoint the problem. I tried giving it a few days off several times over the past 6 weeks, but the pain just keeps coming back. I am trying to train for a triathalon and dont want to loose too much time over this. I have now decided to give it a full week off and have been icing as much as possible while also taking ibuprofen 3 times a day. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this pain might be and how to resolve it as quickly as possible? At this point the pain seems to just be getting worse and it seems to jump around from lower back, to hip joint, to gluteal. I scheduled an appointment to see a orthopedic but they told me they will only be able to treat it if it is a hip issue. ??? This is definitly not sciatica, i have had that issue many times before and this in no way resembles it. the pain seems to be more to the side just above or on my gluteal muscle, behind the hip joint.
My butt hurts badly after running? I run five miles a day at a moderate pace, and I've noticed that my butt really hurts! My legs feel fine, and I stretch for 20 minutes before and after. But my bottom stays sore for the entire day. what are some exercises I can do to loosen the gluteal muscles?
What are gams? Why do women work them out? My fiancee and I heard a radio commercial - "do you want to lose weight in your abs, your glutes, and your gams?" What are gams? I know glutes are short for the gluteal muscles; are gams short for the name of another muscle?

Fell off the swings and. . .? Hit my ass on the ground, at first I thought I hit my tailbone but I think that the damage was to the gluteal muscles above the tailbone. Anyways, it has been a week, the pain is still not gone. It is improved dramatically, but still not gone yet. Any thoughts...?
Could it be Pilondial Cyst? Hello there everyone, I fell off the swings about a week ago and hit my lower back/gluteal area. Unfortunately enough, over a week has passed and the pain is still present. It is fine when I am sitting, standing, or walking around, but when I lay down on my back, or use the gluteal muscles for walking up and down steps, the pain kicks in and stabs me sharply. I'm sort of worried though, I have been looking online at what is called a Pilondial Cyst and I hope I don't have one. I DO have a sacral dimple. It's not very big, but it IS there. . . and the area is red, inflammed (even though i' have been taking ibuprofen), and it hurts when i poke at the upper gluteal muscle.
Squats and leg length discrepancy? So when I was young, I broke my leg and the doctors fixed it "wrong" so my right leg is longer than my left. So now, I've noticed my left gluteal muscles are noticeably smaller than my right ones. I've talked to a doctor about it and have been told that the difference in lengths is no more than the usual discrepancy and it shouldn't have adverse effects... I'm wondering is there any significant risks that I might be facing by doing weighted squats with the discrepancy? And secondly, since I just started really doing squats, is there any chance that they would "fix" or reduce the size difference in my gluteal muscles on each leg? Anyway, thanks in advance!
Is it normal for a heart rate to drop from 125 to 72 whilst steadily cycling on an exercise bike? I was in the gym, cycling at a steady pace and my heart rate increased to 125 after about 2 mins, then suddenly dropped to 72, although my pace of exercise did not change. I got off after 4 mins and was shaking... not sure whether it was due to the poor muscle strength I have or the drop in my heart rate? (I have very poor muscle muscle tone in my gluteal muscles and transverse abdominal muscles) I thought 72 was a normal heart rate for resting... not exercising??? I am 36 and 12 stone (I know I need to loose some weight!). Any sensible words of wisdom appreciated. Took my resting pulse and it's 94!!!!!
Am I exercising my dog too much?!! Didn't know that was possible.? Hi, recently asked a question about labradors and weight and said i walk my 11 month old for 2-3 hours a day and two people said that could cause hip dysplasia. Can't find anything that says that except this from peteducation.com on hip dysplasia. Exercise: Exercise may be another risk factor. It appears that dogs that are genetically susceptible to the disease may have an increased incidence of disease if they over-exercised at a young age. But at the same time, we know that dogs with large and prominent leg muscle mass are less likely to contract the disease than dogs with small muscle mass. So, exercising and maintaining good muscle mass may actually decrease the incidence of the disease. Moderate exercise that strengthens the gluteal muscles, such as running and swimming, is probably a good idea. Whereas, activities that apply a lot of force to the joint are contraindicated. An example would be jumping activities such as playing Frisbee. He does just run and play with other dogs. He doesn't jump. He doesn't go upstairs. Have certificate with good hip scores on his parents grandparents etc. We were advised to go for a labrador by the dogs home when we said we like to run, walk and cycle. Should I leave him at home half the time when we do that? It seems so mean when I know he lives for those times. He's very placid now but will start rampaging about the house if he doesn't get so much exercise. That would probably wear off as he got used to it? The vet was pleased with the amount of exercise he gets but other dog owners have been unhappy with his advice. What do other dog owners think? In the morning we walk through the forest to a big field where he goes for a swim in the river and runs on the grass for an hour to an hour and a half. He walks to and from school in the afternoon on concrete for an hour. In the evenings my husband meets other dog owners for an hour in a small field where they chase each other about. He usually has a good drink and lays down for a while after the morning walk and early evening walk. He has a nap in the afternoon and takes himself to his basket at 9.30p.m on the dot! We cycle with small children so speed is not an issue. Do not take him when its just my husband and I and we're going miles. I mean half an hour on concrete to school and back The pattern in the morning is that I take him off the lead when we're away from all roads and then follow him about for an hour or so and then tell him its time to go at which point he complains but follows me. I have never known him to want a rest. I stop sometimes to chat to other dog owners. He never does! Devils advocate. I think it is using common sense to ask the opinions of more experienced dog owners. What harm could it do and I might learn something?

Right hip area is hurting and radiating down my leg? It gets worse when I sit down for a long time (like longer than 45 minutes), but when I walk it gets better. Does this sound like sciatica? (This happened at the very same time I got a kidney, bladder, and reproductive bacterial infection, and although the "sciatica" type pain is a *little* better, it's still there and I still have to take painkillers at night). The pain is also in my gluteal area and feels like a sore muscle at times.

My knee still hurts--3 years after injury and 1 year after surgery. Suggestions? 3 yrs ago I fell downstairs, landed on concrete & seriously injured my knees. At first, I didn't realize it...I had stopped my workouts because a week before I had pulled a gluteal muscle. When I returned to working out, about 6 weeks later, I noticed pain in my knees. Over the next year, it got a lot worse. Finally, my doc sent me in for an MRI and I was diagnosed with chondromalacia patella. I had arthroscopic surgery 1 year ago. I was supposed to recover within 6 wks but did not. In some ways, it's worse. Sometimes I cannot walk and must use a cane, or even crutches! Still so much pain! Here's another piece of info: within 2 wks of my surgery, I had 2 violent outbursts (from Vicodin) in which I kicked hard surfaces using the leg with the injured knee (I know--very stupid) Since then, I've been told I have an abnormality in my tibial plane and still chondromalacia. The doc does not seem too concerned, but my pain is AWFUL. It affects my entire life. Any suggestions? To Eagleman: Unfortunately, no beach. But I do try to weight train when I'm not in severe pain. Thank you for your prayers. To Frank: I am right there with you about pain killers. I stopped them immediately and will never take them again if I can help it! So dangerous!!
Did I hit the trochanter bone? I can't push the plunger downward as I administered the TOGAMYCIN intramuscular injection to the patient's gluteal muscle. I withdraw and try to other area again, same side... but still I can't push the plunger downward. So, I replace the needle and syringe and tried for the 3rd time on the other side. Still, I wasn't able to push it downward so Igave up and send her to other clinic. What is going on? Did I hit the bone? Coz it really pained her. I was so devastated bout it. Will somebody answer me please? If I hit the bone, what complications might occur to the patient? This is my very first experience in this situation. I've been injecting the same medication before to many patients and I successfully injected it with no sweat and lesser pain. I am licensed to give injection by th way. Furthermore, I have not administered even a single "cc" coz from the very start the plunger wasn't really moving. Yes, I tried to test the plunger after I withdrew the syringe from my second injection and its working! And I don't think it's a nerce coz i injected at the upper right quadrant of the buttocks. So, did I really hit a bone? Will there be complication even there is no single dose of medicine was administered?
how long antibiotics newborn? I had a 6 weeks healthy, breastfed, newborn, when he started to have a stuffy nose and 37,8 Celsius fever. I went to the hospital where they said I must stay there because my son have pneumonia. They put him antibiotics injections gluteal muscle:ampicilin 125 mg/6 hours, cefotaxim 200 mg/ 12 hours. It was strange because he breastfed and sleep very well, no strange sounds. They made blood tests, XRAY 2 Days later, and the doctor told me that my son didn't had pneumonia but it's better he did those antibiotics, because he has a cold, and newborns are sensitive and can develop complications. They continued antibiotics injections, and my baby was so scared and cryed so loud that he developed hoarseness. he even cryed scared when I changed his diaper. Because of that hoarseness, which I am sure it s because so much cry they said he should continue antibiotics injections for 10 day total. They don't have any arguments for me: just "it s better!, we don t want complications". When I try to say something, they threaten me that I am the only responsible for anything happens. They said I could stop injections and give him antibiotics orally suspension, but it's my responsability. Here doctors prescribe antibiotics like drinking water, that's why I am so scared and I don't know what to do!. I feel like they do this because it's the easiest way. What should I do?

For fat burning and possible muscle toning on an elliptical (no arm pumping things)...? ...is it more beneficial to do a long, low resistance work-out with varied inclines (I'm thinking 40 minutes of a Precor elliptical machine on the Gluteal Program) or would I be better off doing shorter, more intense work outs with a higher resistance (20ish minutes on the Weightloss Program)? My ultimate goal is to lose a few pounds (maybe a half inch to and inch of extra fat on my hips and thighs) and get my butt and thigh muscles toned in the process. I'm 20, 5'7" and 140lbs. I have access to this elliptical for another week then will probably have to switch to running on a track (haven't figured out my university gym's summer hours yet). I already know how to eat, it's the exercise part I've allways had trouble with and, frankly, I'm completely flummoxed. Anyone have any advice?
About the elliptical...? You know how you can adjust it to target quads, gluteal, hamstrings, and calves? Well, what is it doing to those muscle groups? Is the elliptical just causing you to lose weight in those areas or tone and reshape the muscles? Thank you!

HERE's MY QUESTION: does it still work or am i doing it wrong?? its hard to do it 30 minutes all the way because my gluteal (leg) muscle hurts very much. so i need to rest. thanks so much for answering!
Hey folks ... does this sound like sciatica? Pain on upper right hip area down my gluteal area sometimes radiating down my leg. Worse when I sit down for more than 30 minutes, wake up in the morning, or walk really fast or run, but it gets better when I walk around in a leisurely stroll for a long time. Pain sometimes feels like a muscle pull, sometimes feels like ice and fire at the same time. (This came on after I was treated for a severe bacterial infection of my uterus ... currently being treated for secondary bacterial infection of bladder).
Pain in lower right buttock? I have a pain in my right buttock right on the lower part towards the center (in the gluteal fold? ), it started about a week ago after I went clubbing ( was dancing, had sex afterwards but not anal) The pain has not gone away but instead has gotten gradually worse, the pain only occurs when I lift my right leg up, or bend over or scoot forwards while lying down. There is no outwards signs, i.e no bruising or redness, but the pain seems to be within, maybe is muscle related? It really has gotten to the point where I will go to the doctor because of the amount of pain getting worse but I'm embarrassed and worried...
Muscle strain leading up to police fitness test? I have a final fitness (beep) test on friday (today is monday) for the police. Unfortunately I got a slight strain in my left gluteal last week playing soccer, which will probably give me some grief doing the turns on the beep test. The test cannot be re-arranged so I really need to at least attempt it. I have been using ice/heat packs and stretching which is helping, but it will probably be touch and go for friday. Does anyone have any good suggestions for me to get through this (i.e. over the counter drugs)? Thanks
